What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in the browser. They serve a range of purposes: keeping a session logged in, remembering preferences, or - more contentiously - tracking activity across sites for advertising.
What we don't use
- Tracking cookies for ads or behavioural profiling
- Analytics cookies such as Google Analytics or Plausible's cookie variant
- Third-party cookies from social embeds or ad networks
- Authentication cookies (the site has no accounts)
Analytics without cookies
Page-view statistics come from GoatCounter, which sets no cookies. It records anonymous, aggregate data such as which pages are visited and the visitor's approximate country, derived from IP and discarded immediately. No personal data, no cross-site tracking. The privacy page covers this in full.
What we might use
The site may use functional browser storage (localStorage, not cookies) to retain interface state during a visit - for example, the evidence types selected in the Ghost Identifier. That data:
- Stays on the device
- Is never sent to any server
- Can be cleared by wiping browser data for this site
Third-party requests
The site loads typefaces from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Google states that font requests set no tracking cookies. Blocking them through a browser or an extension such as uBlock Origin falls back to system fonts without breaking the site.
If this changes
Should cookies or cookie-based analytics be added in future, a consent banner will be put in place first and this page updated. The "Last updated" date will reflect any change.
